Steve Belichick Opens Up About Working for His Dad

January 31, 2017

It’s not very often Steve Belichick speaks to the media, but the Patriots safeties coach was available during Super Bowl Opening Night at Minute Maid Park. Belichick has been working for his dad and the Patriots for four years, but this was his first season as safeties coach. Prior to this year he was a coaching assistant. The oldest Belichick son opened up on what it’s like to be Bill’s son.

This came following a question from a reporter asking him if he feels he’s only in the position he is because of who his dad is. “Yeah, I experience that every day,” Belichick said. “Thank you. Thanks for bringing that up.” He said it motivates him to work even harder, but in the end he really doesn’t care what people on the outside think. He only cares about the people close to him. “Everybody has heard it. Life isn’t fair. I don’t expect it to be. I like to work for what I get,” Belichick said. “I’ll always be Bill Belichick’s son to everybody in the media, but to the people who really matter — my friends and family. I am Steve, so those are the people I care about. I could care less about everybody else.”

The fact of the matter is Belichick has put the work in. He’s been working at training camp for the Patriots since he was in eighth grade. “I worked hard to get to where I was,” he said. “I started working training camps back in eighth grade when the Patriots were at Bryant [University]. I’ve always just tried to create stock for myself and become a valuable asset wherever I go. That’s really been my goal. Obviously I did enough for my dad to give me a position and I’ve just tried to earn it and continue to get better every year.”

Belichick played lacrosse and football at Rutgers and it’s been being part of a team that got him into coaching. “I’ve always enjoyed being on a team,” he said. “I’ve always enjoyed the comradery of a team. Football is the ultimate team sport. There’s nothing like it. Nothing compares to it. Again, being on a team is what I’ve always wanted to do — whether it was football teams, lacrosse teams, basketball teams. Now that I can’t play anymore this is the team I chose to be on and I couldn’t be happier.”

As for what his end goal is in the NFL? He sounded just like his dad. “Just to stay happy like I have been,” he said.
