SAN DIEGO, CA, FEBRUARY 24, 2013 — More than $188,000 was raised at the 17th Annual MDA Muscle Walk 5K held at Crown Point Park on Mission Bay on Sunday, February 24 to benefit children and adults in the San Diego area served by the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Teams of families and friends of those affected by neuromuscular disease participated in the walk wearing Muscle Walk T-shirts, team T-shirts, carrying signs and sporting walk tattoos to help raise funds and awareness for the Association.
Bridget Naso of KUSI News Channel 9/51 and Steph Peters of KSON 97.3 FM were emcees for the event. The band Groove Kitty performed. Top fundraising teams included Team Muscle Makers, BC/DC, Team Jimbo & the Neurology Center and Team Miracles. Top event sponsors included Integrated Associates, GEICO, Pride Mobility and Moneytree.
“The San Diego community went above and beyond this year to support local families served by the Association who will directly benefit from the funds raised on Sunday," said MDA executive director Angel Chanchea. "We want to thank San Diego Parks & Recreation for their generosity in supporting MDA Muscle Walk and allowing our families, local businesses and the public to come together to make this event such a success.”
The money raised at the 17th Annual MDA Muscle Walk 5K will help speed MDA research seeking treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases. Also, it will help MDA provide area children affected by muscle disease with a free summer camp experience at Camp Cuyamaca in Descanso, CA, as well as medical and health care services at MDA’s clinic at Rady Children’s Hospital.
