KSON's Bluegrass Special is Southern California's only all-bluegrass music radio program featuring the best of today's bluegrass music along with a mix of oldies, local artists and bluegrass gospel music. The show also features news and information about San Diego's bluegrass music scene. Listen for "The San Diego Bluegrass Society Live" featuring local bands playing live at the KSON studio!

  • Friday, April 1: Alan Munde and Bill Evans will perform at the La Jolla Christian Fellowship (627 Genter Street in La Jolla) at 7 PM. Presented by the San Diego Bluegrass Society. No admission charge but you will be invited to donate to the SDBS to help offset the costs of the concert. A banjo workshop led by Bill Evans and Alan Munde will be held from 3:30 to 5 PM.   • Friday-Saturday, June 10-12: Huck Finn's Jubilee will feature The Punch Brothers, David Grisman, Balsam Range, Flatt Lonesome, Dailey & Vincent, Rhonda Vincent, Special Consensus, Dan Tyminski, The Soggy Bottom Boys, Della Mae, the Boxcars, Mountain Faith, Leftover Salmon, Love Canon, the Slopbucket String Band and many others at the Cuyamaca-Guasti Regional Park in Ontario, CA (800 North Archibald Avenue).   • Saturday, June 18: Bluegrass Day at the Del Mar Fair will feature a full day of music by local bluegrass bands, a band scramble and much more. 11 AM to 8 PM on the Paddock Stage, Del Mar Fairgrounds. Free with fair admission.

AND DON'T FORGET THESE REGULAR MONTHLY BLUEGRASS EVENTS IN SAN DIEGO! 

  • 1st Tuesday of the month:  The North County Bluegrass and Folk Club holds it's monthly "featured band" night at Round Table Pizza, Ash and Washington in Escondido. 7-10 PM. No admission charge; donations accepted.
  • 2nd Tuesday of the month: The San Diego Bluegrass Society holds an open mike and jam at Fuddruckers/La Mesa (Grossmont Shopping Center) 6:30-9 PM. No admission charge.
  • 3rd Monday of the month: The San Diego Bluegrass Society holds a "slow jam" at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in North Park (4011 Ohio Street), led by recording artist and music instructor Janet Beazley. There is an admission charge of $5 for SDBS members and $10 per session for non members. Non members can join on site and receive their discount immediately.   • 4th Tuesday of the month: The San Diego Bluegrass Society holds it's monthly "featured band" night at the Boll Weevil Restaurant (9330 Clairemont Mesa Blvd) in San Diego from 6:30 to 9 PM. No admission charge; donations accepted.

ABOUT WAYNE RICE

  • He has hosted KSON's Bluegrass Special since March 7, 1976.
  • He is an original member of Brush Arbor, a band that recorded two albums for Capitol Records and won the Academy of Country Music's Vocal Group Of The Year Award in 1973.
  • He currently plays banjo and sings with a local San Diego Bluegrass band called Lighthouse and another called Grassology.
  • He won the International Bluegrass Music Association's "Broadcaster of the Year" award in 1995.
  • He is a lifetime member of Country Music Association.
  • He serves on the board of the International Bluegrass Music Association Trust Fund which provides financial assistance to bluegrass music professionals in times of emergency need.
  • He graduated from San Diego State University and received his masters degree from Bethel Theological Seminary. An expert on youth and family issues, he founded an organization called Youth Specialties and has written numerous books for youth workers and parents. He has also been a pastor in a local church.
